SPANIELS SECRETARY REPORT 2021

Mrs. Francess Colclough

Field Trial Spaniels Secretary / Hon. Treasurer

What a year we have just had. We suffered terrible losses of our members and my condolence goes out to all of the family and friends effected.

Our Chairman, Lee Wales, unfortunately passed away after a long battle with illness. Lee has been the Chairman of the Society for over 10 years and was an extremely keen and talented dog man, he competed in many Spaniel Field Trials and qualified dogs to the Championship. Lee did a wonderful job as Chairman by supporting the trials and stepping in to judge when asked upon. Lee will be missed by all.

More sad news come the Society's way when we learned the passing of Rod Chapple. Rod had been a member of the committee for 10 years and was in constant support of the Club throughout. Rod was a passionate and successful Spaniel man, qualifying numerous dogs to the Championship and making many up into Champions. Again another huge loss for the Society and Rod will be missed by all.

Jim Lock was the Society's Vice President for over 10 years and was a founder member of the Essex Field Trial Society. So, we was very saddened when we learned of his passing. Jim enjoyed his dogs and competed in many Field Trials across the country including with his best bitch Donna of Dewfield who ran in multiple Championships.

At the beginning of the year Mr. Simon Gibson passed away, Mr. Gibson allowed us to compete our trials on the Exning Estate for over 20 years, he was a very keen shooting man and the trials were always exceptional, with terrific ground and game.

I would like to on behalf of the Society and the competitors offer our sincere thanks to all our hosts who, so graciously, gave their ground for our sport. Also, to the keepers for providing us with excellent days. As well as the team of safe and accurate guns who always know exactly what is required to give the dogs a good and fair chance of winning the trials. On behalf of the Society and the competitors, I would like to thank all the judges who gave their time and did a marvellous job.

First A V Novice Spaniels at Exning Estate by invitation of Simon Gibson. Judges: Wayne Greig and Lesley Young. Guns provided by friends of the Estate who shot well and gave all the dogs' equal chances of winning the trial. Clive took us down the moor, fantastic ground with plenty of game.

1st: D. Anderson, Dog, Borrowfield Black Heath

2nd: Mr. & Mrs. Mackender, Bitch, Jadeamoss Magnificent Opal at Skipmeg

3rd: S. Moore, Bitch, Ardyle Marmelo who also won Guns' Choice.

English Springer Spaniel at Castle Rising Estate by kind invitation of Lord Howard. Judges: Mark Colclough and Wayne Greig. The guns were friends of Danny who knew exactly what was needed to give the dogs a good and equal chance of winning the trial. The woods had plenty of woodcock, pheasant, partridges and ground game.

1st: S. Quinn, Bitch, Helmsway Hot Gossip

2nd: I. Bannister, Dog, Helmsway Happy Times

3rd: Mr. & Mrs. Mackender, Bitch, Belvden Troff

4th: R. Chapple, Bitch, Quarrymoor Skybreeze

COMs: G. Smith, Bitch, Ivagar Spiritr. J. Luxford, Bitch, Whiznic Waterwynch of Howysyke and S. Higgins, Bitch, Kansas Kate. S. Higgins, Bitch, Kneeshot Sacabi won Guns' Choice.

Unfortunately I had to cancel the 2-day Open Stake for Retrievers on Ampton, the Open Cocker on Exning and the A V Novice on Stoke-by-Nayland due to COVID-19 restrictions. I apologised to the owners of the Estates and the judges that were booked for these trials for the inconvenience. My thanks to Chris Bridgewater for being our COVID-19 officer and keeping everything under control.

My thanks to Sue, Yvonne, Andy Ling and all of the helpers who acted as stewards, stops and game carriers at the trials. I would also like to thank John Walker who picked up at our Trials.
